I think that we should be conscious that these students that we will be tutoring have had teachers try to teach them to read. Not every student learns in the same way. Some learn visually, some oraly, etc. It might be necessary to approaching reading instruction from different angles (not just phonics, whole language, or language experience) but a combination so that the student is recieving input from various angles.

I'm always nervous about meeting my students for the first time -even when working with them one-on-one. Will the child be persevering and eager to learn? What kinds of reading experiences has he/she had? Did he/she enjoy them? Or was reading a source of frustration? Will the child come to me angry and deeply hurt? Or will he/she be excited to see me? I guess we'll find out soon enough...
